Mobility is driving interactivity in the workplace

How mobile workers are driving the need to connect in new ways

By 2017 there are expected to be between 4,5 and 5 billion mobile phone users around the world. The number of smartphone users is expected to be between 2 and 3 billion by next year. It’s no wonder mobility is impacting the workplace.

A fundamental shift is seeping into boardrooms as a result: work is more often not a place to go but something people do. According to IDC, more than two-thirds of Canadian employees already do some of their work each week outside the office.

And in South Africa? A BDlive story reports that more than 95% of employees in South African companies rely on mobile devices in the office, according to a survey conducted by Dell in partnership with Microsoft. The story continues: “According to the survey, some 38% of respondents rely on their mobile devices as business productivity, connectivity and as sales tools while out of the office.”

That’s a telling number that points to an implicit fact: many workers are already mobile. They’re not in the office, they’re on the road, at customers, remote offices, coffee shops and restaurants, at home and anywhere they can conduct work, except in the office.

In the office it’s easy to walk to a colleague’s desk and initiate a discussion. Or a meeting request puts people in the same meeting room quickly where they can collaborate and interact, sharing documents and conversations with ease. But that’s not the case when they’re mobile.

Phone calls and WhatsApp may cover the basic interactivity needs of mobile workers, particularly in one-on-one communications, but the moment they need real collaboration those tools come up short. Yet many are equipped with laptops, smartphones and tablets. The inclusion of electronic whiteboards in the office and putting ultra-short throw projectors in the hands of the right mobile employees extends interconnectivity horizons beyond the company network perimeter. Connected imaging devices such as multifunction printers that print, scan, copy, and fax broadens their capabilities even further.

That makes mobile workers effective:

– It improves customer service
– It meets the emerging demands of a generationally diversified workforce
– It cuts costs (travel, time to market)
– It makes your business responsive
– It maximises productivity and profitability

A communications platform, a connected app and software environment, can create an interconnected collaborative ecosphere for your business that fosters seamless communication between your employees and customers.
